A 23-year-old fraudster, Sandeep Kumar Sen, was arrested in the city on August 16 for allegedly duping numerous individuals out of Rs1.25 crore in just 15 months. Investigations revealed that he used the ill-gotten gains to establish two bars-cum-restaurants in upscale central Delhi.
According to DCP (City) Deepak Bhuker, while Sen was a first-year BBA student, his key accomplice, Mohd Sahil, had only completed 12th grade. Sen posed as officials from agencies like the CBI, ED, RBI, and the police, extorting money by putting victims under the guise of a digital arrest.
Sen is described as tech-savvy, adept at downloading and manipulating FIR formats used by central agencies to target unsuspecting victims. After defrauding over a dozen individuals, Sen and Sahil launched two establishments named Night Queen Bar & Restaurant and Metro View Bar & Restaurant, spending over Rs40 lakh. They even employed bouncers and led a lavish lifestyle.
Initially, the duo lured victims with promises of doubling their money through dubious investments. When victims attempted to reclaim their funds, Sen and Sahil, posing as CBI or Income Tax officials, threatened them with fake FIRs and forged summons. They primarily targeted individuals interested in investing in digital currency, seeking to earn multi-layered profits. To build trust, they created fake ledger accounts and documents showing substantial benefits.
Additionally, the cybercriminals saved their phone numbers as “CBI officer” in Truecaller to deceive victims further. Authorities noted that at least four criminal cases were pending against Sen in various police stations in Prayagraj.
In a separate case, Delhi Police registered a complaint against Jashandeep Kaur for attempting to secure a US visa using fraudulent documents. The US Embassy in India reported that Kaur admitted to never working for the company listed on her application and conspired with others to forge documents. Investigations into her case are ongoing.
In Ferozepur, police arrested brothers Vishal Udan Jaili and Sonu for their involvement in drug and arms trafficking. Led by SP Randhir Kumar, the operation resulted in the seizure of 1.5 kg of heroin, Rs12.9 lakh in cash, and a pistol. Both suspects have multiple criminal cases against them, with further investigations underway to uncover a larger drug network.
In other news, a mob attacked visitors at the memorial of Bangladesh’s first president, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, preventing them from reaching the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum. Notably, war hero Abdul Kader Siddique faced violence during the incident, which follows an appeal by Sheikh Hasina’s son to honor Mujibur Rahman. Concurrently, the BNP organized nationwide sit-ins against alleged government violence.
