MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A 22-year-old man has been arrested following a shooting that left two Milwaukee police officers injured Thursday night.
Assistant Police Chief Nicole Waldner said officers responded to a call about a “subject with a weapon” near 24th and Garfield. The call quickly escalated to “shots fired.” Upon arrival before 9 p.m., officers were unexpectedly fired upon in an alley.
Tremaine Jones was taken into custody early Friday morning at a home about four and a half miles from the shooting scene, near 37th and Villard. Neighbors reported hearing loud police activity around 2 a.m.
Jones has a criminal history involving police encounters. In 2023, he pleaded guilty to resisting an officer and driving a stolen car. Court records reveal that in 2021, Jones was arrested after fleeing police in a stolen vehicle, which eventually crashed into a snowbank. The victim of the stolen vehicle expressed feeling unsafe in their community and sought restitution.
Jones paid restitution and completed community service but was not sentenced to jail at that time.
He remains in police custody, and formal charges related to the shooting will be filed with the district attorney’s office soon.
