YORK REGION, Ont. — A major drug investigation dubbed Project Magic has led to the arrest of 13 individuals and the seizure of more than $3.5 million in psychedelic drugs, with two suspects still at large, York Regional Police (YRP) announced.
Authorities are seeking Mozda Karim, 38, of Toronto, and Samer Akila, 32, of London, Ontario, in connection to the case. Investigators believe Karim is in the United Kingdom and Akila may be in Egypt. Warrants have been issued for both.
The probe began in March 2024 after community complaints about a FunGuyz Magic Mushroom store in Thornhill, near Yonge and Centre Streets. YRP’s Guns, Gangs, and Drug Enforcement Unit executed 29 search warrants across Ontario, targeting the illegal production and sale of psilocybin and DMT.
The operation led to:
181 kg of dried psilocybin
137 kg of edible psilocybin
167,645 psilocybin capsules
179 grams of DMT (dimethyltryptamine)
541 grams of illicit cannabis
$450,000 in cash
Over $1 million in property assets
A total of 78 charges have been laid against 15 people, ranging from trafficking to production and possession of controlled substances. Police confirmed all FunGuyz locations involved are considered illegal dispensaries under current Canadian drug laws.
“There are no legal stores in Ontario allowed to sell these substances,” YRP emphasized in a statement, warning landlords could also face financial and criminal penalties for renting space to such operations.
Authorities said the investigation has delivered a “significant blow to the illegal psychedelic drug trade” in the region.
