LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An 18-year-old Louisville man, Zakaria Osman, is facing multiple felony charges after police say he was involved in a violent attempted car theft that led to a shootout in the Park DuValle neighborhood.

Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) say the incident happened on April 12 at a home on the 3500 block of Young Avenue. Osman and a group reportedly attempted to steal a Camaro parked in the homeowner’s backyard.

The homeowner was alerted by the car alarm and went outside to investigate. At that moment, several suspects allegedly pointed guns at him. The homeowner retreated inside to protect his two children. When he looked out the window, the suspects began firing at the house, according to police.

The homeowner returned fire using his own weapon as the suspects fled in a stolen Jeep. One of them was later dropped off at Jewish Hospital with a gunshot wound. It’s unclear which suspect was injured.

Police used cellphone records and surveillance footage to place Osman at the scene. He was arrested Tuesday and charged with first-degree robbery, receiving stolen property over $10,000, and first-degree wanton endangerment, among other charges.

LMPD also arrested a juvenile in connection with the case on June 9. The investigation into the remaining suspects is ongoing.
