SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WMTV) — More than a year after a deadly shooting in Sun Prairie, police have arrested Zachary O’Connell, 22, in connection with the incident, officials said.
Police Chief Kevin Warych announced that the Sun Prairie Police Department, with assistance from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Team, took O’Connell into custody in the Town of Bristol.
O’Connell was booked into the Dane County Jail on potential charges of first-degree intentional homicide and two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety. Chief Warych said that tips and digital evidence were instrumental in making the arrest.
“The residents near Martin and Elm Street, they were scared that night,” Warych said. “We did everything we possibly can to provide closure not only to the victim’s family but also to the community.”
Sun Prairie Mayor Steve Stocker noted the announcement coincided with National Law Enforcement Day, praising local police, firefighters, EMTs, and dispatchers for their dedication in responding to crises.
Officers initially responded around 7:20 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, after neighbors reported gunfire near the 500 block of Martin Street. Upon arrival, officers found two victims. William Flanary, 24, of Brookfield, died at the scene, while the second victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Police later clarified that the injured victim knew the suspect. Chief Warych said the criminal complaint will provide further details on the relationship and that the motive remains under investigation.
Earlier in the investigation, SPPD released a photo of a vehicle of interest, described as a Subaru Forester or similar model with five-spoke rims. Chief Warych confirmed the vehicle is now in police custody and no longer under investigation.
Authorities continue processing evidence as the case moves forward.
