Zachary Mize Arrested After Burglary and Chase in Gainesville

by Amelia Crawford

A Gainesville man, Zachary Martin Mize, 30, was arrested after allegedly committing a burglary, followed by a high-speed chase with law enforcement on Tuesday morning.

According to Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson B.J. Williams, the burglary was reported by a passerby around 7:40 a.m. on Old Cleveland Highway near U.S. 129. The witness informed authorities that he saw Mize inside the home and then leaving in a vehicle. Recognizing that the person in the home wasn’t the homeowner, the witness provided a description of the vehicle and its license plate number to dispatch.

As a deputy responded to the scene, he spotted Mize’s vehicle traveling south on U.S. 129. The deputy attempted to pull Mize over, but Mize initially stopped at a nearby convenience store, only to drive off at high speed when the deputy approached. Mize allegedly drove erratically, narrowly avoiding other vehicles on the road.

The deputy suspended the pursuit, but a second deputy located Mize’s vehicle approximately two miles south, behind a shopping center. Mize was arrested without further incident.

Mize was booked into the Hall County Jail on charges including first-degree burglary, fleeing law enforcement, and making terroristic threats against the deputy during the arrest. As of Wednesday afternoon, he remained in custody without bond. The burglary investigation is ongoing.
