NAKURU, KENYA — Police have arrested Zachariah Wanjohi in connection with the death of his 23-year-old wife, Hannah Waithera, whose decomposed body was discovered in a plantation at Technology Farm, Nakuru West, days after she was reported missing.
Waithera, an M-Pesa agent operating in Nakuru’s central business district, was last seen on a Wednesday afternoon as she left her shop to deposit over Ksh.250,000 at a local bank. She never returned, prompting her family to file a missing person report at Nakuru Central Police Station.
A week later, on Wednesday afternoon, police summoned Wanjohi’s family to Kaptembwa Police Station, where they were informed that a body found two days earlier had been positively identified as Waithera.
Investigations revealed her mobile phone was last traced to Kijabe on the same day she disappeared, intensifying the mystery surrounding her death.
Before his arrest, Wanjohi told reporters he had attempted to contact his wife when she failed to come home. “I called her, but she didn’t pick up,” he said. “I even contacted a police officer friend to trace her number.”
Waithera’s family, however, reported distressing encounters with police in the days following her disappearance. Mary Njeri, Waithera’s mother, accused officers of harassment during a raid at their home. “They violently harassed us. A female officer even pulled a gun on us and seized all our phones,” she said.
Police have not released further details about the circumstances of Waithera’s death or Wanjohi’s role, as the investigation remains ongoing.
