Prakasam district police have arrested a woman, Vemula Akhila, for allegedly stealing 25 sovereigns of gold worth approximately Rs. 12.50 lakh from her relative’s house.

The incident occurred on November 4, 2023, when Bathula Venkata Ramana, a resident of Pathakuchipudipalli in Kanigiri, reported a burglary at her home. According to the complaint, an unidentified person had broken into her house and stolen a variety of gold ornaments, including chains, earrings, rings, a bracelet, a necklace, a mangalsutra, and gold coins.

Following an investigation, police discovered that the perpetrator was none other than Vemula Akhila, a relative of the victim. Akhila had frequently visited Ramana’s house and had observed the location of the valuables. On the day of the burglary, when the family was away, Akhila used a spare key to enter the house and stole the gold ornaments from a locked bureau.

The police arrested Akhila on Wednesday at the RTC depot in Kanigiri town while she was on her way to Ongole to sell the stolen gold. Upon her arrest, all the stolen items were recovered from her possession.

This incident highlights a breach of trust, with the suspect taking advantage of her proximity to the victim’s family. The police have praised the swift investigation, which led to the recovery of the stolen items and the arrest of the accused.
