In a bizarre turn of events, the district police arrested a woman on Wednesday after she was found to have staged a fake robbery to cover up her theft of Rs 3 lakh from her parent’s house in Chennimalai.
The accused, identified as 34-year-old V Ramya of Arthanaripalayam, had initially filed a complaint with the police, claiming that a masked gang of three men had broken into her house, tied her up, and robbed Rs 3 lakh. Ramya alleged that the gang threatened her at knifepoint while her father, Viswanathan, was in the washroom.
However, suspicions arose after the police reviewed CCTV footage from the area, which revealed no such incident had taken place. Upon further questioning, Ramya admitted to stealing the money herself.
According to police sources, Ramya had taken the money from her father’s house on Friday when her parents were not home. She had stolen Rs 3 lakh, intending to use part of it to cover expenses for her brother’s upcoming wedding. Ramya had also sent the stolen money online to pay off personal debts.
To cover her tracks, she staged the robbery and filed a false complaint, hoping to divert suspicion. The police arrested her after she confessed to the crime.
