WILMINGTON, Del. — A Wilmington man, David Smith, 43, was arrested Sunday after being found in a stolen vehicle and is facing multiple charges, including burglary.
New Castle County Police said an officer attempted to stop Smith near Maryland Avenue, but he fled at high speed. The pursuit was ended due to safety concerns in the residential area. The vehicle was later found abandoned at West Second Street and North Union Street.
Smith was located and taken into custody by a state trooper on South Union Street. Authorities say he is wanted in connection with a business burglary earlier in December, during which cash and over 30 cartons of cigarettes were stolen.
Smith faces multiple charges, including:
Felony burglary in the third degree
Felony theft under $1,500
Felony wearing a disguise during a felony
Felony disregarding a police officer’s signal
Misdemeanor reckless driving
Misdemeanor resisting arrest
Misdemeanor criminal mischief under $1,000
Misdemeanor driving while suspended or revoked
Seven violations for failing to stop at stop signs
One violation for leaving a vehicle unattended
Smith was arraigned and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $23,000 cash bail. Police noted he also had an outstanding warrant for motor vehicle theft and related charges issued by Delaware State Police.
