SUMTER, S.C. — A Sumter man was arrested Saturday night and charged with attempted murder after allegedly assaulting a woman with a baseball bat and shooting her during a dispute.
Deputies with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Old Pocalla Road around 11 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. They found the victim lying in the yard with severe injuries. The woman told deputies that Willie James Sigler, still inside the home, had beaten and shot her.
A Sumter police officer arrived shortly after and helped render aid to the victim, who was later taken to a hospital in serious but stable condition.
Authorities say Sigler initially refused to come out, but a family member convinced him to surrender peacefully. He was arrested and taken to the Sumter County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.
Deputies believe the violence stemmed from a personal dispute. The case remains under investigation.
