In a major crackdown on narcotics, Chimpu Police in Arunachal Pradesh arrested two individuals, including a student leader-cum-journalist, for their alleged involvement in drug trafficking.
The arrests were made on August 22 after the police intercepted a white Grand Vitara at the Chimpu Check Post, acting on specific intelligence inputs.
The accused have been identified as:
William Tana Tara (27) – Secretary (Research & Documentation) of the All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU) and holder of a Press ID card from APN Live.
Biki Phukan (28) – a non-tribal resident of H-Sector, Itanagar, originally from North Lakhimpur, Assam.
The operation was supervised by SDPO Itanagar DySP Kengo Dirchi, Inspector N. Nishant, and the Chimpu Police team, with oversight by SP Jummar Basar. The Special Judicial Magistrate (Narcotics) Oli Koyu and an independent witness were also present during the search.
From Tara’s possession, police recovered:
10+ vials of heroin (net 2.5 grams)
4 empty vials
Cash
Multiple mobile phones
Press ID card
Grand Vitara vehicle
A case has been registered under Chimpu PS Case No. 57/2025 under Sections 21(a)/27A/29 of the NDPS Act. Authorities are now focusing on identifying the wider drug network and supply chain.
The Itanagar Capital Police reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy against narcotics and assured continued strong action against those involved in the drug trade.
