William Redmond Jailed for Defrauding Vulnerable Victims

Man Stole Over £18,000 by Posing as Charity Collector

William Redmond, 33, from Liverpool, has been jailed for four-and-a-half years after defrauding two vulnerable men out of more than £18,000. Appearing via video link at Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday, December 4, Redmond was sentenced for two counts of fraud by false representation. Indefinite restraining orders were issued to protect both victims.

In September 2023, a bank alerted police to potential fraudulent activity, suspecting Redmond was still in the building. Realizing he was caught, Redmond attempted to flee but was stopped by a member of the public before being arrested.

It was later revealed that Redmond had been scamming one vulnerable victim over the course of a year, during which he posed as a worker for the charity Marie Curie and fabricated numerous other reasons to demand money. The victim, feeling pressured and intimidated, was repeatedly visited by Redmond, often during the night, and coerced into withdrawing more than £10,000 from ATMs.

Even after his arrest, Redmond attempted to visit the victim’s home in February 2024, shortly after being released from prison. In April 2024, another elderly victim reported that Redmond had been visiting his home, again fraudulently posing as a charity collector. Over a month, the victim withdrew over £8,000 for Redmond, who manipulated him during multiple visits.

Redmond was charged with fraud by false representation in May 2024. Detective Constable Alexandra Lindley condemned Redmond’s actions, emphasizing how fraud profoundly affects victims, both financially and emotionally. “Targeting vulnerable people in their own homes and scamming them out of their savings is truly unacceptable,” Lindley said. “This result should reassure the community that Redmond can no longer prey on vulnerable residents.”
