William R. Jones Arrested Over Homemade Explosives in Laurel County

Jones charged with first-degree wanton endangerment after KSP finds explosives

by Amelia Crawford

A Laurel County man, William R. Jones, 36, was arrested on Sunday, June 22, after Kentucky State Police discovered homemade explosives during an incident on KY 490.

Trooper Scottie Pennington encountered a potentially dangerous situation when he observed an item burning in the roadway. Jones approached and admitted the burning material contained a mixture of potassium nitrate and sugar—common ingredients in homemade fireworks. He informed officers that additional explosive materials were stored at his home and consented to a voluntary search.

The Hazardous Devices Unit (HDU) and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) assisted with the search at Jones’ residence, where more explosive substances and components were found. All materials were safely collected and disposed of by the HDU.

Following the incident, Jones was taken into custody and charged with first-degree wanton endangerment. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on June 23.

The investigation is ongoing, led by Trooper Pennington with support from KSP, HDU, and ATF personnel.
