William Kahler Johnson Charged in $2K Hartsville Theft

Suspect accused of trailer burglary and property damage

DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A man has been arrested in connection with a trailer burglary that resulted in over $2,000 in stolen merchandise in Hartsville.

William Kahler Johnson was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with malicious injury to property, grand larceny, and burglary, according to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the theft report last Sunday on North Fifth Street, where a trailer used for freight storage had been broken into. According to arrest warrants, Johnson cut the lock off the trailer and stole tires valued at more than $2,000.

Surveillance footage and witness statements were key elements in identifying Johnson as the suspect, authorities said.

Due to concerns about Johnson’s criminal history and his perceived danger to the community, both the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office and Solicitor Mike Burch recommended that bond be denied — a request the court upheld.

Johnson remains in custody as the investigation continues.
