Sean Blackburn, 36, of Wetumpka, was arrested early Wednesday morning after a single-vehicle crash on Coosa River Parkway. Blackburn was initially arrested for driving under the influence of controlled substances but was later charged with drug trafficking after authorities found a significant quantity of illegal pills in his possession.
Wetumpka Police Chief Ed Reeves confirmed that Blackburn had two types of prescription narcotics. In addition to DUI and trafficking charges, Blackburn faces two counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Blackburn, who had previously been employed as a Wetumpka police officer, had a history with the law. In 2019, he was arrested for theft from the department’s evidence locker and later pleaded guilty to second-degree theft, illegal possession of a credit or debit card, and tampering with evidence. Blackburn was sentenced to prison time and placed on probation, and prosecutors are now seeking to revoke his probation due to his latest arrest. He remains in the Elmore County Jail without bond.
