The Odisha Crime Branch has cracked down on a digital arrest scam, arresting Rohit Kumar Jaiswal, a resident of Howrah, West Bengal, for duping an Odisha man of Rs 73.62 lakh.
The victim from Paradip reported the scam to the Cyber Crime Police Station on May 15, 2024, alleging that fraudsters posing as CBI and Delhi Police officers threatened him. They falsely claimed a parcel booked in his name had been confiscated by Delhi Customs containing illegal items such as ATM cards, Indian passports, laptops, and drugs.
To prove his innocence, the complainant was coerced into transferring Rs 73,62,000. Realizing the deception, he filed an FIR, prompting a detailed investigation led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Shradhanjali Panda.
After analyzing transaction records and digital evidence, the team identified and arrested Rohit Kumar Jaiswal at his Howrah residence. The accused, along with associates, impersonated officials from DHL, CBI, and Delhi Police to execute the scam.
The case involves offenses under multiple sections of the IPC and the Information Technology Act, including cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. Rohit Kumar Jaiswal has been brought on transit remand to Odisha and produced before the SDJM Court in Kujanga, Jagatsinghpur.
Authorities have seized mobile phones, SIM cards, Aadhaar cards, and frozen several bank accounts linked to the fraudsters. The investigation continues as the Crime Branch works to dismantle the network behind this sophisticated cybercrime.
