PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — A Broward County man, 64-year-old Walter Woods, was arrested over the weekend for allegedly stealing money from his mother while she was hospitalized and dying.
The Pembroke Pines Police Department’s report, dated January 12, 2022, states that Woods’ mother, 83-year-old Birtell Troup, was admitted to the hospital on June 15, 2020, and remained there until her passing on July 23, 2020.
During her hospitalization, Woods is accused of depositing a $2,800 check from his mother’s bank account into his own, a theft uncovered by one of Troup’s other sons.
Surveillance footage reviewed by police showed Woods making the deposit, and his actions were confirmed by his siblings.
After Birtell Troup’s death, suspicious activity was detected on her credit cards. Authorities said Woods attempted to transfer additional funds from her accounts to his personal accounts.
Moreover, police retrieved audio recordings in which Woods impersonated his mother during calls to the bank. In these recordings, his siblings identified his voice.
In total, Woods is alleged to have stolen $6,435.44 from his mother’s accounts. He now faces charges including grand theft and possession or use of the personal identification of a deceased person.
