A 19-year-old student’s desperate attempt to escape mounting debts by staging a fake robbery at his own home backfired after Vizag city police arrested him and three accomplices.
On the night of October 5, three masked men allegedly broke into a house in Indiranagar, Kancharapalem, assaulted a woman and another family member, tied them up, and fled with Rs 2.1 lakh cash, 120 grams of gold ornaments, and a car. What initially appeared to be a robbery was later revealed to be an inside job orchestrated by Dharmala Krishnakanth (19), the victim’s grandson.
The accused, Krishnakanth, reportedly facing financial hardship due to losses in online trading, devised a plan to stage a robbery at his home while his father, a civil contractor, was away in Hyderabad. He roped in his friends — P Pramod Kumar (30), Sk Abhishek (21), and A Satya Surya Kumar (24) — to carry out the act.
The three entered the house, assaulted Krishnakanth and his grandmother, and made off with valuables to simulate a real burglary.
However, based on a complaint from the elderly woman and CCTV footage analysis, police traced the stolen car to Marikavalasa and apprehended the suspects. During interrogation, the trio confessed to staging the robbery under Krishnakanth’s direction.
Dr. Shanka Brata Bagchi, Vizag Police Commissioner, confirmed the recovery of all stolen property and the arrest of all four accused. Further legal proceedings are underway.
