DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A Durham man is facing a long list of felony and misdemeanor charges across four North Carolina counties following a high-speed chase and multiple criminal investigations.
Victor Alfonso Elvira-Tapia, 29, was arrested on Monday by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol after allegedly fleeing officers in a stolen black Ford F-150 on I-885, reaching speeds of 100 mph in a 55 mph zone. Authorities say he also attempted to ram a patrol car during the pursuit.
Charges in Durham County include:
Felony flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle
Felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle
Failure to heed light or siren
Driving while impaired
Misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon
Open container alcohol violation
Misdemeanor speeding
In Granville County, Elvira-Tapia is accused of:
Shooting a man with a semi-automatic pistol
Stealing a 7 x 14 dump trailer
Felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
Felony larceny of a motor vehicle
Felony possession of stolen vehicle
Felony conspiracy
In Orange County, warrants allege he:
Stole a 2012 gold Chevy Equinox
Took the victim’s pocketbook
Faces charges of felony larceny of a motor vehicle and misdemeanor larceny
In Wake County, he is accused of:
Stealing 14 car batteries from the Apex Walmart
Theft valued at $2,125.76
In total, Elvira-Tapia faces 19 pending charges across Durham, Granville, Orange, and Wake Counties, with bonds totaling $165,000. Records show he previously spent nearly a year in jail in 2016 and has been arrested over a dozen times since 2011.
He has already appeared in court in Durham and Orange Counties, with upcoming hearings scheduled in Granville and Wake Counties.
