Five Arrested in Jharkhand Honour Killing of Vibha Kumari and Subhash Kumar
Tarhassi, Jharkhand: Police have arrested five members of a family in connection with the brutal honour killing of 21-year-old Vibha Kumari and her partner Subhash Kumar, also 21, in Purni Tarya village.
The arrested include Vibha’s father Upender Mahto, mother Kalavati Devi, and uncles Janeshwar Mahto, Vimlesh Mahto, and Rakesh Mahto, according to Lesliganj SDPO Manoj Kumar Jha. All five have been booked under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Tarhassi police station-in-charge Anand Ram said that authorities received a tip-off around 6:15 PM on Sunday about two bodies dumped in a well in the village. Police swiftly retrieved the corpses, and post-mortem examinations were carried out at MMCH Daltonganj.
An FIR was lodged on Monday by Jay Prakash, brother of the deceased boy, Subhash Kumar alias Karo Singh, who belonged to Bhandra village. Vibha was a resident of Purni Tarya village, and the two had been in a long-term relationship opposed by the girl’s family. Her family had already arranged her marriage elsewhere, police said.
According to SDPO Jha, on the night of August 1–2, the girl’s family allegedly lured Subhash into meeting Vibha. Once he arrived, the five accused reportedly tortured the couple to death in a premeditated act of violence.
Police recovered an iron rod and a lathi believed to have been used in the murders. Subhash’s mobile phone was also seized from the scene.
“This is a shocking case of honour killing. Our investigation is ongoing, and further legal action will follow,” said OC Anand Ram.
