MOOSE JAW — On March 26, the Moose Jaw Police Service (MJPS) received around 30 calls from residents reporting an attempted grandparent scam. Several individuals had fallen victim to a female suspect who posed as a bail bondsperson, collecting money under false pretenses.
The MJPS’s Criminal Investigation Section (CIS) launched an operation, which led to the arrest of 44-year-old Veronique Charpentier from Montreal, Quebec. Charpentier faces multiple charges of fraud over $5,000, and these charges were filed by the Moose Jaw Police Service along with assistance from other agencies.
This marks the second arrest related to the grandparent scam by the MJPS since 2024.
On April 3, with the help of the Regina Police Service, the MJPS executed a search warrant and seized proceeds of crime linked to the scam.
Charpentier appeared in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on April 4, where she was remanded into custody.
The Moose Jaw Police Service reminds the public that legitimate police officers, judges, lawyers, or jails will never contact citizens asking for money to bail out a loved one. The MJPS encourages anyone who suspects they have fallen victim to this scam to reach out to their local police or contact the MJPS at 306-694-7600.
