On February 25, 2025, deputies responded to a burglary call at Northside Mobile Home Park on Highway 441 North in Coffee County. Upon arrival, deputies met with the victim, who reported that Vernon Smith, 63, had assaulted her. The victim also suspected Smith of breaking into her home and stealing several items.
The altercation reportedly began during a verbal dispute, escalating when Smith physically attacked the victim. A witness intervened, separating the two. The victim, recently released from Wheeler County Jail, revealed that her mobile home had been burglarized during her incarceration. Items reported missing included a jewelry box, clothing, footwear, and various electronics.
When questioned, Smith admitted to losing control of his emotions and attacking his daughter. He further confessed that he and 31-year-old Sierra Simmons had entered the home to retrieve a photo album of his late wife. Smith was arrested for simple battery, and deputies subsequently located Simmons. She denied involvement in the burglary and refused to permit a search of her residence for the missing items.
Officers, however, suspected the stolen goods might be in Simmons’s residence. A search warrant was obtained, and officers uncovered narcotics during the search. As a result, Simmons was arrested and charged with theft by receiving and two counts of possession of a controlled substance. Smith faces charges of simple battery and burglary.
