Fonta Young, 41, a resident of Utica, was arrested following a larceny report from Schuyler Street on March 16. The victim reported that their purse, containing credit cards and other personal items, had been stolen.
According to Utica Police Department (UPD), the suspect used the victim’s identification in an attempt to purchase cigarettes at a nearby convenience store. However, the store clerk refused service because the photo on the ID did not match the suspect.
The store’s refusal was relayed to the victim, who then contacted the police. Days later, the victim spotted the suspect near the store again, leading to an altercation during which the victim managed to recover some of the stolen items.
On April 2, Fonta Young was apprehended and charged with:
Two counts of grand larceny
Criminal possession of stolen property
Petit larceny
Young now faces multiple charges related to the theft and attempted fraud.
