In a shocking case of deception and betrayal, Mumbai Police arrested Urmila Haldive, wife of a BMC employee, for allegedly stealing jewellery worth Rs10 lakh from her own home to fund her escape plan with a lover.
What began as a routine theft complaint soon took a dramatic turn. Urmila had initially accused her husband, Ramesh Dhondu Haldive, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) water department employee, of stealing her gold jewellery. However, the investigation by Dindoshi police quickly revealed there were no signs of a break-in.
Upon examining phone records, police discovered Urmila was in constant contact with another man, with whom she was planning to elope. She had allegedly stolen over 100 grams of gold, sold it, and transferred the proceeds—Rs10 lakh—to her lover’s account.
Further investigations unveiled a disturbing twist: Urmila was also having an affair with her 18-year-old daughter’s boyfriend, to whom she had handed over part of the stolen jewellery for safekeeping. The young man was taken into custody and admitted to receiving the ornaments.
Confronted with this evidence, Urmila confessed to the theft and admitted she had falsely accused her husband to cover her tracks. Police later recovered the stolen items from a jewellery shop based on her statements.
Senior Inspector Mahendra Shinde confirmed Urmila had been married for 18 years and maintained secret relationships through social media while her husband was away at work.
Both Urmila and her daughter’s boyfriend have been arrested. Urmila has been sent to judicial custody, while the investigation continues to uncover the role of her other lover.
