CANTON TOWNSHIP, MI — Two Indiana residents have been arrested and charged in connection with a string of storage unit thefts in Canton Township, affecting over 30 victims and resulting in losses exceeding $20,000.

Umar Long, 45, and Michelle Gilbert, 41, both from Indianapolis, face multiple felony charges including larceny over $20,000, receiving and concealing stolen property over $20,000, and breaking and entering. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Canton Township Police began investigating a series of break-ins at storage facilities near Joy and Haggerty roads in early April. On April 27, officers caught Long in the act of breaking into a unit and later discovered Gilbert at a local hotel with tens of thousands of dollars in stolen property.

Both suspects are being held on $50,000 bond, with their next court appearance scheduled for May 9. Authorities have so far identified over 30 victims and believe additional victims may come forward as the investigation continues.
