In a swift operation, the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Podanur arrested three people, including a 12-year-old boy, on Saturday for stealing a gold chain from a passenger traveling on a train.

The arrested have been identified as S. Ujathali (31), U. Sathya (25), and a minor boy, all hailing from Chettipalayam near Podanur in Coimbatore.

According to police, C. Isakki (57) from Tirunelveli district was traveling with his family on the Pollachi–Coimbatore passenger train on Friday night. During the journey, Isakki noticed the young boy attempting to steal a gold chain from his bag kept on the seat.

When Isakki tried to retrieve his chain, Ujathali allegedly assaulted him to help the boy escape. The victim immediately pulled the emergency alarm chain, bringing the train to a halt near Chettipalayam. However, the culprits managed to flee.

After the train reached Podanur Junction, Isakki lodged a complaint with the Government Railway Police. Acting on the complaint, officers registered a case and launched an investigation.

The probe revealed that Ujathali, Sathya, and the minor were behind the theft. Police later traced and arrested the trio on Saturday evening and recovered the stolen gold chain and gold rings from their possession.

Ujathali and Sathya were produced before the court, while the minor boy was sent to a juvenile home as per legal procedure.
