Udom Emmanuel Detained by EFCC Over Alleged N700bn Fraud

by Amelia Crawford

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday detained former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, for questioning over an alleged N700 billion fraud, according to reports from Channels Television.

Sources within the EFCC confirmed that Emmanuel was held after voluntarily appearing before the commission to address allegations of funds diversion during his tenure.

A petition submitted by a group known as the Network Against Corruption and Trafficking accused the ex-governor of mismanaging N3 trillion received from the Federation Account over eight years while leaving behind a N500 billion debt and N300 billion in unpaid projects. The petition also claimed that N700 billion remained unaccounted for.

Emmanuel served as Akwa Ibom State governor from 2015 to 2023, succeeding Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The investigation into the alleged financial misconduct is ongoing.
