MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — An Uber driver was arrested Wednesday after being caught driving a stolen vehicle on the Palmetto Expressway, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

Jose Friol, 44, of Sweetwater, was behind the wheel of a white Chevrolet SUV when a license plate reader flagged the vehicle as stolen. An FHP trooper stopped Friol at the intersection of NW 27 Avenue and 215 Street in Miami Gardens and placed him under arrest without incident.

Records confirm the vehicle had been reported stolen by the Hialeah Police Department, and the owners recovered the SUV following the arrest.

Friol was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he remained in custody as of Thursday morning. He faces first-degree grand theft, a felony, and trespassing an unoccupied structure, a misdemeanor.

Friol, originally from Cuba, now awaits a court appearance before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Ariel Rodriguez.
