S R Nagar police arrested Adidala Swarna Latha (29) and J Pavani (26), both residents of NBT Nagar, Banjara Hills Road No 1, for allegedly stealing two idols from the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Vinayaka Temple four days ago.

The idols taken were of Shiva and Parvathi Devi. According to ACP Punjagutta, P Venkata Ramana, Swarna Latha had suffered immense personal loss, losing four close relatives, including her husband, between 2018 and 2021. Distressed, she sought guidance from a local priest who advised her to perform daily rituals for peace.

Unable to afford the idols herself, Swarna Latha identified the two idols in the temple and stole them when an opportunity arose.

Both women were produced before the court and subsequently remanded.
