In a shocking case of fraud, two men who allegedly tricked a Dum Dum resident last month by posing as police officers and making him part with his valuables have been arrested in Maharashtra. The accused, Taqi Yousuf Ali (40) and Hassni Naser Hossain (45), both from Karnataka, were taken into custody on April 21 by officers from the Baguiati police station.
The incident, reported by Sankar Prasad Datta, a resident of Dum Dum Road in Nager Bazar, occurred on March 9. Datta explained that while returning home one afternoon, he was approached by two men on a motorcycle. They introduced themselves as police officers and questioned him about the valuables he was wearing on a deserted road.
The fraudsters told him to remove the valuables so they could pack them for him. Trusting their intentions, Datta complied. They wrapped the valuables in a piece of paper and handed him a packet. Later at home, Datta discovered that the packet contained only stones, and his valuables had been stolen.
The police used CCTV footage to track the suspects, revealing that their motorcycle had a fake number plate. The investigation also uncovered that the duo had hired a car from Kaikhali and fled the city to Mandarmani, where they stayed in a hotel.
Using electronic evidence and documents, the police were able to identify the suspects and trace their location to Maharashtra. Sources have confirmed that the two men have been linked to several similar crimes across the country.
In addition to the Dum Dum case, authorities have found at least four other cases involving the duo in various police stations across India. Both men are currently in police custody, where they will face further questioning and investigation.
