In a dramatic turn of events, two chain snatchers were arrested in separate encounters with the police in Gomtinagar early on Monday. The accused, Monu Rajput and Mahesh Rawat, were apprehended near Janeshwar Mishra Park and Sahara Bridge, respectively, after they opened fire on police personnel in an attempt to escape capture.
According to DCP (East) Shashank Singh, the incidents unfolded around 3 am when police teams were conducting routine patrols in the area. The first suspect, riding a motorcycle without a number plate, was signaled to stop by the police. Instead of complying, he fired at the officers. In response, police fired back, injuring him in the leg, and he was arrested near Janeshwar Mishra Park.
Shortly after, police followed the accomplice to Sahara Bridge, where a second encounter ensued. This suspect, too, fired at the police before being shot in the leg and arrested.
The police recovered a country-made pistol, a stolen chain, a purse, and a bike without a registration plate from the duo. During interrogation, both suspects admitted to being involved in multiple chain snatching and robbery incidents, particularly targeting women in Gomtinagar and nearby areas.
The arrests highlight the police’s ongoing efforts to combat crime in the region and ensure the safety of residents. The duo will now face charges related to attempted murder, robbery, and possession of illegal firearms.
