In a major drug bust in Mizoram’s Champhai district, over 10,100 methamphetamine tablets weighing approximately 10.1 kg were seized, and two persons were arrested, officials from the state Excise and Narcotics Department said on Monday.
The first arrest was made on Saturday when Lunminlalzo, 34, from Churachandpur town in Manipur, was apprehended. Acting on inputs from him, a 19-year-old woman, Christy Hmingthanzami of Champhai’s Vengthar locality, was arrested from Maubawk village the following day. Authorities also seized a car used for transporting the contraband.
Peter Zohmingthanga, spokesperson for the department, stated that the seized methamphetamine tablets were intended for smuggling outside Mizoram. Both accused have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
The department has intensified its anti-drug efforts, focusing on counseling drug addicts in Aizawl and other district headquarters. Many addicts have been sent to rehabilitation centers with parental consent, while others are engaged in community service following court orders.
