The Bhopal Cyber-Crime Branch has arrested two individuals linked to an elaborate online job scam that duped victims with promises of easy profits for completing simple internet tasks. The accused were detained from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and Sridungargarh, Bikaner, Rajasthan.
The suspects are Kanakbhai Ahmadabadi (32) from Chamanpura, Ahmedabad, and Hansraj Godara (22) from Upni, Sridungargarh. Authorities also seized a mobile phone and SIM card used in the scam.
Additional DCP Shailendra Singh Chouhan explained that the accused operated Telegram channels offering work-from-home “job opportunities.” They lured victims by promising earnings for booking flight tickets and giving five-star online ratings. Victims were instructed to register on fake websites and initially deposit small sums, with fake profits shown to build trust.
However, when victims tried to withdraw larger amounts, they were told their ‘score’ was insufficient and pressured to deposit more money. Eventually, large sums were siphoned into fraudulently rented bank accounts. The accused also sold or rented their bank accounts to other cyber fraudsters for similar schemes.
The investigation was triggered by a complaint filed by Pooja Dwivedi from Prakriti Garden, Bawadia Kala, on November 7, 2024. She reported being added to a Telegram channel promising income for online tasks. Over time, she deposited Rs 5.95 lakh into fraudulent accounts but could not withdraw funds. Afterward, the accused blocked all communication with her.
The Cyber-Crime Branch continues probing the case to identify additional victims and associates involved in the scam.
