KATHMANDU, Nepal — Authorities have arrested Bhuvan Karki and Nitesh Pokharel for allegedly defrauding individuals by promising them jobs abroad in America and Canada.
Bhuvan Karki, 25, from Kanchanpur, Shuklaphanta Municipality-1, and currently residing in Tokha Municipality-6, Kathmandu, is accused of collecting Rs 1 crore from three victims. Bhuvan promised to send them to America for foreign employment but went out of contact after receiving the money.
Nitesh Pokharel, 42, a resident of Kageshwori Manohara Municipality-3, Kathmandu, is accused of defrauding four victims by taking Rs 12 lakh with the false promise of sending them to Canada. Like Bhuvan, Nitesh also disappeared after receiving the funds.
Both victims filed complaints after losing contact with the suspects, prompting the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, Teku to launch an investigation. Bhuvan was arrested on Monday from Kathmandu Metropolitan City-12, and Nitesh was apprehended on Tuesday from Kageshwori Manohara Municipality-3.
Following their arrests, Bhuvan was handed over to the District Police Office, Kathmandu for further investigation, while Nitesh was transferred to the Department of Foreign Employment, Tahachal for processing.
Authorities Warn of Increasing Foreign Employment Scams
Authorities have been urging the public to exercise caution when dealing with individuals or agencies offering foreign employment opportunities. Scams like these, which exploit individuals’ dreams of working abroad, have become more common, and the police are advising people to verify the credentials of those offering such services before committing any money.
