by Ananya Mehta

Three individuals were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly extorting a woman of Rs84 lakh through a new cyber fraud technique called ‘digital arrest’, the police reported.

According to Inspector Ranjit Singh, the officer in charge of the Cyber Crime Police Station, the incident came to light when the woman filed a complaint stating she had been duped of Rs84 lakh. The scam, known as ‘digital arrest’, involves the accused posing as law enforcement officers, such as CBI or customs officials, and threatening their victims with arrest over fake international parcels containing banned drugs. The fraudsters make these threats through video calls, tricking people into believing they are under investigation.

Based on the woman’s complaint, a case was registered, and an investigation was launched. The police successfully arrested three individuals: Ram Singh, Akshay Kumar, and Narendra Singh Chauhan. Akshay Kumar is identified as a bank employee, while Ram Singh is an account holder, the police revealed.

The accused were reportedly involved in several other cases of fraud, with one of their associates, Umesh Mahajan, arrested by Delhi Police on July 30 last year for his role in similar crimes.

The police are continuing their investigation, and further details are expected to emerge as the case develops.
