A 40-year-old clerk of a public sector bank at Kamalapur was arrested on Monday for allegedly misappropriating over Rs 6.28 lakh from multiple savings account holders. The accused has been identified as Trinath Bisoyi of Sompentha in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district.

Police said Bisoyi was issuing receipts to customers without crediting the deposited amounts to their accounts. The alleged misappropriation affected at least 26 account holders between May and October.

The fraud came to light when several customers complained to the branch manager that their deposits were not reflecting in their passbooks. An internal inquiry by the bank confirmed the allegations, revealing that Bisoyi had siphoned off the funds over several months.

An FIR has been lodged at the cyber crime and economic offence police station. Inspector in-charge Shankar Panda stated that the investigation is ongoing to determine if additional account holders were affected by Bisoyi’s illegal activities.
