Towns County Volunteer Firefighter Arrested on Fraud Charges

Jerry Wayne Canterbury Faces Multiple Charges Over Falsified Records

by Sophia Bennett

TOWNS COUNTY, Ga. — A volunteer firefighter in Towns County was arrested on fraud charges following an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

Jerry Wayne Canterbury, 55, from Hiawassee, was arrested on March 17 and charged with two counts of Misdemeanor False Statements or Falsified Records and one count of Felony Computer Forgery. The charges stem from an investigation that began on December 12, 2024, after authorities were alerted to a theft case involving Canterbury.

During the investigation, GBI agents uncovered evidence suggesting that Canterbury had falsified documents related to the Firefighter Pension Fund and engaged in computer forgery. The case remains active as further details are being gathered.

Canterbury was booked into the Towns County Sheriff’s Office, and authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward. Tips can be submitted to the GBI Tipline at 800-597-8477 or online at gbi.georgia.gov.
