Topeka Man Colton G. Miller Arrested for 21st Homicide of the Year

27-year-old faces first-degree murder charges after fatal shooting on Dec. 12

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Colton G. Miller, 27, was arrested in connection with Topeka’s 21st homicide of the year following a fatal shooting on December 12.

Around 11:30 p.m., officers with the Topeka Police Department responded to a welfare check in the 2000 block of SW Stone. Upon arrival, they found 45-year-old David Bentley of Topeka suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite efforts by medical personnel, Bentley was pronounced dead at the scene.

Miller was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. He faces the following charges:

First-degree murder
Unlawful to acquire proceeds from a drug transaction
Use of communication facility in commission of a felony drug violation
Distribution of controlled substances
This incident marks Topeka’s 21st homicide in 2024, continuing a challenging year for the city’s law enforcement. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to uncover additional details surrounding the crime.
