MADISONVILLE, Ky. (WFIE) – A Madisonville man was arrested on Saturday for possessing a handgun on school grounds after a confrontation with another parent. According to the Madisonville Police Department, officers responded to a disorderly conduct call in the 300 block of West Arch Street.
Two parents were reportedly arguing when Tony Sewell, one of the parents involved, went to his vehicle and placed what the caller suspected to be a handgun into his waistband. Upon arrival, officers confronted Sewell, who confirmed he had a weapon on him but claimed he had not drawn it. Sewell explained that he had retrieved the gun only after feeling threatened by an approaching crowd, but surveillance footage from the school showed no such crowd.
The vehicle was parked directly in front of the main entrance of the school. A witness involved in the argument confirmed seeing Sewell with his hand near the gun on his waistband.
Sewell was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property. He was booked into the Hopkins County Jail and is currently being held on a $10,000 bond.
