Tony Avent Jr. Charged with Attempted Murder, Drug Crimes in Rocky Mount

Police say nearly 9 pounds of marijuana seized during search

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WITN) – A Rocky Mount man is facing multiple felony charges after police say they found nearly nine pounds of marijuana during a search connected to an attempted murder investigation.

Police arrested 30-year-old Tony Avent Jr. of Rocky Mount, charging him with:

Two counts of attempted first-degree murder

Possession of a firearm by a felon

Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury

Discharging a firearm from within an enclosure to incite fear

Discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle

Possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana

Possession of marijuana

Maintaining a dwelling for the storage of marijuana

According to authorities, officers responded around 1 a.m. Saturday to reports of a shooting in the 500 block of Sutton Road. When they arrived, they found a 31-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her foot. She was taken to the hospital and has since been released.

During a follow-up investigation, police searched Avent’s home and vehicle, where they reportedly recovered almost nine pounds of marijuana.

Avent was taken into custody and booked without bond.

The Rocky Mount Police Department says the investigation remains ongoing.
