In response to a surge in motorcycle thefts, the East Godavari district police have arrested two men and recovered 31 stolen bikes valued at Rs 16 lakh. The arrests follow a specialised surveillance operation led by SP D Narasimha Kishore and Central Zone DSP K Ramesh Babu.
The operation, spearheaded by Inspector Bajilal of Prakash Nagar Police Station, included SI S Siva Prasad and Crime Party PCs K Pradeep Kumar, S Veerababu, and V Shiva Prasad. During the operation, Thurla Somayya from Marlamudi village, Nallajerla mandal, was arrested. He confessed to stealing motorcycles across Rajahmundry, Korukonda, Nallajerla, Eluru, and Vijayawada over the last three months.
Also apprehended was Chirla Kishore, from Jagannadhapuram village, Nallajerla mandal, who admitted to buying stolen bikes from Somayya.
Investigations linked the recovered motorcycles to cases registered at multiple police stations: nine at Prakash Nagar, nine at Rajahmundry III Town, three at Rajahmundry I Town, two at Nallajerla, one at Korukonda, three at Eluru, and one in Vijayawada.
SP Narasimha Kishore praised the police team for their diligent efforts in recovering the stolen vehicles.
