PIKE COUNTY, Ky. — Three residents of Pike County were recently arrested on theft charges stemming from two separate incidents.

Dike Newsome, 41, of Mikes Branch, Pikeville, was arrested on January 2 for theft and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. According to Kentucky State Police Trooper B. Eckart’s citation, a caller reported that his 2013 Ford F-350 work truck was stolen while he had left it running at a local gas station. Newsome, who was familiar to store employees, was identified as the suspect and was later found at a residence in Lower Johns Creek. The stolen truck was located in his yard with its lights still on. Inside the truck were a .45 caliber handgun, cash, and various tools. Newsome allegedly told officers he took the truck because he was cold and wanted to get home.

In a separate incident on December 3, Chad A. Smallwood, 44, of Dorton Jenkins Highway, and Courtney Childress, 31, of Stone Coal Road, were arrested after being found in a stolen trailer belonging to the city of Jenkins. The Jenkins Police Department had called for assistance when they discovered the duo in the trailer. Smallwood and Childress claimed they had no knowledge that the trailer was stolen. Upon searching the trailer, officers found several drug paraphernalia items, a handgun, and other items.

Smallwood was charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, receiving stolen property ($10,000 or more), public intoxication, possession of drug paraphernalia, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, and failure to appear. Childress faces charges of receiving stolen property ($10,000 or more), public intoxication, possession of drug paraphernalia, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, failure to appear, and first-degree bail jumping.

As of the latest records, all three suspects remain in custody at the Pike County Detention Center.
