FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – Three individuals were arrested on Wednesday after a multi-agency drug task force operation in Franklin County. The operation, which started with the Lawrence County Drug Task Force, focused on a planned drug delivery of approximately one pound of cocaine from West Point, Mississippi to Red Bay, Alabama.
Authorities identified the main suspect as Darius Jones of West Point, Mississippi. He was arrested upon arrival at the location where the cocaine was being delivered. Two other adults, Stephanie Wofford of Huston, Mississippi, and James Smith of West Point, Mississippi, were with him in the vehicle at the time of the arrest.
Police found that Smith had a loaded firearm on him when he was taken into custody. Additionally, Wofford was traveling with her two-year-old grandchild, who was not secured in a car seat. The Department of Human Resources was alerted, and the child was taken into care.
A K9 unit then investigated the vehicle, alerting officers to the presence of drugs. Upon searching, they discovered the cocaine inside a plastic bag.
Charges:
Darius Jones: Drug trafficking – cocaine, chemical endangerment of a child, and giving false identification to law enforcement.
Stephanie Wofford: Drug trafficking – cocaine and chemical endangerment of a child.
James Smith: Drug trafficking – cocaine, chemical endangerment of a child, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of an altered firearm, and possession of controlled substances.
All three individuals were booked into the Franklin County Detention Center. Jones and Wofford were both granted a bond of $100,000. Authorities from several agencies, including the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, DEA, FBI Safe Streets Task Force, and other local departments, participated in the investigation.
