by Ananya Mehta

Thane: Quick thinking by a commuter led to the arrest of a seasoned mobile thief, Samir Ahmed Sheikh (35), at Thane Railway Station on the evening of March 24.

The incident occurred on Platform No. 2 as passengers were boarding a Kalyan-bound local train. Sushant Deepak Gamre (26), a bank employee from Diva, noticed a hand in his pocket around 9:00 PM and realized his mobile phone was being stolen.

Gamre acted immediately, confronting Sheikh and, with the assistance of fellow passengers, successfully restrained him until the Thane Railway Police arrived. Authorities recovered a high-end mobile phone valued at Rs54,000 from the accused.

Sheikh, a resident of Kurla, has been formally charged. Under the supervision of Senior Police Inspector Archana Dusane, police are investigating whether Sheikh is linked to other pickpocketing incidents along the Central Line.

This case highlights the importance of alertness among commuters and swift action in preventing thefts at crowded railway stations.
