Thane Police Arrest Gang in Rs 17 Lakh Gold Scam

Senior citizens targeted with fake gold swap scheme

by Ananya Mehta

Police in Thane district, Maharashtra, have arrested three members of a notorious gang, along with a Mumbai-based jeweller, accused of defrauding senior citizens of gold worth lakhs. The gang reportedly carried out similar scams across multiple locations, deceiving numerous individuals.

Modus Operandi

The gang allegedly posed as police officers or helpful citizens to gain the trust of their victims. They warned seniors of imminent thefts and persuaded them to hand over their gold jewellery “for safety.” Using sleight of hand, they swapped the real gold with counterfeit pieces, leaving the victims unaware.

Arrest and Recovery

Acting on a tip-off, law enforcement intercepted Raju Chavan, Ramesh Jaiswal, and Sanjay Mangade during an attempted theft. Police seized gold ornaments worth Rs 17 lakh and linked the suspects to 12 unsolved cases.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing to trace any connections to similar scams in other districts and identify additional victims.
