Thane: The Government Railway Police (GRP) has arrested Dilip Ramavatar Sahu (52), a resident of Vitthalwadi, Kalyan East, in connection with a series of thefts reported onboard express and local trains in Maharashtra’s Thane district.

The arrest comes after the GRP launched an investigation into the theft of a gold chain at Kalyan railway station on January 16. Senior Inspector Pandhari Kande said a trap was laid during peak hours, and Sahu was apprehended.

During interrogation, Sahu confessed to multiple thefts within the Kalyan GRP jurisdiction. Police recovered a gold chain worth Rs 3 lakh and 18 stolen mobile phones valued at Rs 4.15 lakh, bringing the total recovered property to Rs 7.15 lakh. The accused had been linked to several theft cases registered between 2023 and 2026.

In a separate incident, a 28-year-old woman, Chetana Devrukhkar, tragically died after falling off a crowded suburban local train at Badlapur railway station during the morning rush hour. She was attempting to board a moving train to CSMT when she slipped and fell. A case of accidental death has been registered.

Meanwhile, a Thane court acquitted 50-year-old Mohammed Tariq Pirmohammed Shaikh of murdering his wife, Sagufta Shaikh, citing inconsistencies in witness testimony and insufficient evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
