TUNBRIDGE WELLS – A 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly scamming a pensioner by posing as a police officer.

Thai-Rye Wright-Lewis, of Walton Green, New Addington, Croydon, allegedly contacted a man in his 70s on Tuesday, 25 March, claiming his bank account had been compromised. The victim was reportedly instructed to withdraw a large sum of money and meet the fraudster in a supermarket car park in Pembury to hand over the cash.

Kent Police responded quickly to the report at 12:05 pm. Officers attended the scene and, after a short foot chase in the Tesco car park, detained Wright-Lewis.

He has been charged with conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation and remanded in custody. Wright-Lewis is due to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 27 March.

Kent Police continue to urge the public to remain vigilant against phone scams, especially those involving impersonation of law enforcement officers.
