LELAND, Miss. — Three people have been arrested on capital murder charges, and a fourth on attempted murder, following a mass shooting in Leland, Mississippi, that left six people dead and more than a dozen injured, the FBI announced Monday.
The suspects — Teviyon L. Powell, 29; William Bryant, 29; and Morgan Lattimore, 25 — each face capital murder charges, while Latoya A. Powell, 44, has been charged with attempted murder, according to the FBI’s Jackson Field Office.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive but said the shooting appeared to have been “sparked by a disagreement among several individuals.” The FBI added that additional arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
The shooting occurred Friday night during homecoming weekend celebrations in downtown Leland, shortly after a local high school football game. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with victims lying in the street as people fled in panic.
Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and two others later died from their injuries. Bloodstains and scattered shoes remained on the pavement the following day.
“It was the most horrific scene I’d ever seen,” said witness Camish Hopkins, recalling the aftermath of the shooting.
The FBI released surveillance photos late Sunday showing four individuals — one woman and three men — described as “unknown suspects” at the time. By Monday, four arrests had been made.
The Leland shooting marked the 14th mass killing in the United States in 2025, according to data from the Associated Press/USA TODAY/Northeastern University Mass Killing Database, which tracks cases involving four or more intentional killings within 24 hours.
The Leland tragedy was one of several shootings across Mississippi during the state’s homecoming weekend.
In Heidelberg, police found two bodies, including that of a pregnant woman, on a high school campus the same night. An 18-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and illegal possession of a firearm on school grounds.
Separately, at Alcorn State University, one person died and two others were injured after gunfire erupted near a campus building following a homecoming football game. In Jackson, a juvenile was also injured in a shooting near Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium during a Jackson State University tailgate event.
Authorities continue to investigate each of the violent incidents, calling the weekend one of the deadliest in Mississippi in recent years.
