Toronto police have arrested a teenager in connection with the tragic shooting death of eight-year-old Jahvai Roy, who was struck by a stray bullet while lying in bed in his North York apartment on August 16.
The boy was with his mother near Martha Eaton Way and Trethewey Drive when the incident occurred shortly after midnight. Jahvai was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead.
The 15-year-old suspect, now 16, was taken into custody last Friday. Police charged him with first-degree murder and five firearm-related offences. Officers say he was found in possession of a loaded, modified automatic firearm at the time of his arrest.
Two other youths remain at large: Ibrahim Ibrahim, 17, and Amarii Lindner, 18, both from Toronto, face first-degree murder charges. Lindner was 17 when the shooting happened.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw urged the public to help locate the suspects and warned that anyone harboring them may face criminal charges.
Detective Sergeant Jason Davis of the homicide unit confirmed that, while Jahvai was not the intended target, the shooting was planned, keeping the first-degree murder charges in place.
Police believe Ibrahim and Lindner are still in the Toronto area and continue to seek information from the public.
